Dr. Sunday OMEIKE
Lecturer
Sunday Osaizua Omeike, PhD., FASLN, is a Microbiology lecturer born in Ibadan, Oyo State and hails from Esan South-East Local Government Area, Edo State.
He earned his B.Sc. (Hons), at the University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun State. He proceeded to bag his M.Sc. (Hons) and Ph.D. in Food and Industrial Microbiology at the Federal University of Agriculture, Ogun State. He started his journey as an academic at the Department of Biological Sciences of our great University where he continues to teach and carry out research till date.
Dr. Omeike has carried out research in environmental degradation at Masters level where he formulated a novel immobilizing agent for microbial cells and enzymes for potential use in bioremediation and food and chemical industries. He pursued purification of antimicrobial agents from microbial sources for his Doctoral thesis and successfully produced a novel antibacterial compound from a fungus. His research interests include contributing to Actinobacteria diversity and search for novel antimicrobial compounds. He is currently seeking to isolate rare and potentially novel actinobacteria isolates via conventional and computational methods, with a view to purifying novel antimicrobial compounds toward contributing to antimicrobial resistance solutions.
He has accessed the Research Visitation Fellowship of the Institute of Microbial Technology (IMTECH), India, and was also a recipient of India’s Department of Science and Technology (DST) Research Training Fellowship -Developing Countries Scheme (RTF-DCS fellowship). He was also awarded the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Travel Award for Scientists, and was recognized as the best presenter at the Nigerian Applied Microbiologists Network Research Symposium. He has published in reputable international and local scientific journals, and has also attended various scientific conferences and workshops. He is also a member of various scientific societies.
Dr. Omeike has served the University on various committees and panels, and was previously the Director of the Sports Directorate for two years. He is currently the Acting Dean, Student Affairs in the Institution.
He has contributed to his immediate community as an antimicrobial resistance (AMR) awareness advocate, with community engagement in Ogunmakin, and environs on the public health issue. He also writes science opinions and engages in science communication for societal awareness in various media outlets. He was also guest expert on a COVID-19 awareness radio program with Premier FM during the COVID-19 lockdown. He is married with three children, and his hobbies include student engagement and everything football.
