At McPherson University, excellence is not only measured by academic achievement but also by the desire to create meaningful change beyond the classroom. One of our students who embodies this spirit is Afolabi Fathia, a 300-level student of Public Health, whose passion for humanitarian service has led her to establish a thriving NGO dedicated to restoring dignity, hope, and opportunity to vulnerable individuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Fathia\u2019s journey into community service began with a simple but unforgettable moment. One day, after offering food to a woman on the street, she watched the woman break her portion into two to share with a friend. That act of kindness, expressed in the midst of hardship, left a lasting impression. As Fathia listened to the struggles of the woman and a young girl beside her, she felt a calling that extended beyond empathy. It became the spark that birthed her NGO, a platform she describes as \u201ca small light of hope for people who often feel unseen.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Since then, her foundation has touched more than 500 individuals through structured outreach programs. From providing over 200 sanitary pads to schoolgirls through the PAD a GIRL CHILD INITIATIVE, to feeding over 200 elderly people for an entire week, her projects reflect intentionality and compassion. Each milestone serves as a reminder that transformation often begins with small, consistent acts of love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Running an NGO as a student, however, is not without challenges. For Fathia, securing financial support remains one of the toughest hurdles. Balancing lectures, assignments, and community work can also be overwhelming. Yet, with resilience, discipline, a supportive team, and what she describes as \u201cGod\u2019s faithfulness,\u201d she finds the strength to excel both academically and philanthropically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Fathia credits the McPherson University environment for expanding her vision. The diverse community encouraged her to share her dreams, speak boldly about her foundation, and welcome others into the mission. Many students have joined as partners and donors, offering both moral and financial support that continues to propel the NGO forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Among her numerous initiatives, selecting the most impactful is nearly impossible. Whether it is paying WAEC fees for students, distributing sanitary pads, or feeding the elderly, each project addresses a unique need, dignity, survival, or opportunity. For Fathia, impact is measured not only by the scale of outreach but by the lives touched and the hope restored.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her work has also gained heartfelt feedback from communities in Ibadan and across host locations. From elderly beneficiaries calling to express gratitude to schools reporting improved confidence in girls who received pads, these responses reinforce her commitment. They also fuel her plans to make future outreaches more consistent and to expand to new communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As a young leader, Fathia has learned that leadership goes far beyond titles, it is rooted in empathy, service, patience, and consistency. Her tenure as President of the Public Health Department further shaped her understanding of collaboration and responsible leadership. Looking ahead, her long-term vision is to fully register the NGO, build stronger partnerships, and establish a sustainable structure capable of reaching communities across Nigeria. After graduation, she hopes the organization will continue to grow, evolve, and ultimately outlive her, spreading care, dignity, and hope for generations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
