McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, recently organised an Academic Seminar themed \u201cEffective Study Habits and Time Management\u201d, through the Guidance and Counselling Unit of the Directorate of Student Affairs. The seminar attracted members of the University Management, staff of the Directorate of Student Affairs, students, and was aimed at equipping participants with practical skills for improved academic performance and personal development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
Delivering the keynote address and chairing the seminar, the Vice-Chancellor emphasized that effective study habits and efficient use of time remain critical to academic success and lifelong achievement. He observed that in a fast-paced world filled with distractions, students must intentionally cultivate discipline in their study routines and time management practices. Drawing from his extensive academic and administrative experience, the Vice-Chancellor noted that excellence is more often a product of deliberate habits and wise time stewardship than of raw intelligence alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The Vice-Chancellor further reminded students that time is the only resource equally available to everyone and that success depends on how wisely it is utilized. He urged students to prioritize their education, personal growth, and character development, stressing that they are not defined by past failures but by the choices they make daily. He encouraged participants to leave the seminar inspired and empowered to apply the principles discussed to their academic and personal lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
In his welcome address, the Acting Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Kayode O. Olumurewa, described the seminar as a reflection of the University\u2019s commitment to holistic student development. He noted that while the Office of Student Affairs is often associated with regulation and discipline, its primary focus remains the welfare of students, including their academic success, emotional well-being, and personal growth. He assured students that the University provides a supportive environment to help them navigate the challenges of campus life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Olumurewa encouraged students to take full advantage of the services of the Guidance and Counselling Unit, emphasizing that seeking counselling is a sign of wisdom and self-awareness. He also highlighted institutional support initiatives such as the Work-Study Programme, designed to assist students facing financial challenges while enabling them to gain valuable work experience. He reaffirmed the accessibility of his office and other support structures, urging students to seek timely help whenever challenges arise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The guest lecturer, Professor Taiwo Adenegan, Chairman of the Counselling Association of Nigeria (Ondo State Branch), charged students to develop resilience, delay gratification, and prioritize their academic responsibilities. He advised students to study consistently, engage in group discussions, and stay focused on their goals, while cautioning them against substance abuse. He also stressed the importance of seeking guidance and counselling support when faced with academic or personal difficulties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The seminar featured an interactive question-and-answer session that allowed students to engage directly with the speakers and seek clarification on issues related to study habits, time management, and student support services.
