For Precious Asaba, a 300-level Nursing student of McPherson University, that moment came on 22 May during the Excellence Conference Vigil. While others left the gathering encouraged, she left carrying a divine assignment. During the vigil, she sensed God calling her, but fear gripped her heart and her response was simply, “No, Lord.” Two days later, on 24 May, God encountered her again in her room in a way she could neither deny nor explain, an experience witnessed by her roommate. In that overwhelming moment, she heard the words, “I have called you. You must obey. Shine your light.” Those words shattered every excuse. She surrendered completely, unaware that her obedience would lead to one of the most defining seasons of her life.

On 26 May, while reflecting on words God had spoken through another person, Precious withdrew to the university chapel to pray. There, God spoke again with unmistakable clarity: “I have crowned you the Presidency.” Shocked by the weight of the instruction, she questioned whether she was capable of such a task. Immediately, the Lord reminded her, “David was small, but I anointed him.” Like the shepherd boy whom God chose ahead of stronger and more experienced men, she realised that divine calling is never determined by human qualifications. Still seeking confirmation, she prayed that God would miraculously provide for the journey if it was truly His will. That same evening, around 8:45 p.m., she unexpectedly received an alert of ₦40,000, from which she purchased the ₦5,000 presidential nomination form. It was the first undeniable evidence that the God who gives an assignment also provides for it.

The days that followed became a testimony of supernatural provision. On 30 May, while wondering how an unfamiliar face could possibly win a presidential election, she sensed God assuring her that, “A new face represents a new era and a new beginning.” He instructed her to build a campaign website, an idea that had never been attempted in the faculty’s election. She obeyed without knowing how it would happen. A 400-level Computer Science student, Yakubu Goodness, volunteered to design the website without charging a single naira, while a graphic designer in Lagos also offered his services free of charge. On 2 June, Precious attended her presidential screening, scored 68 per cent, and on that very day the website was completed. The following day, her campaign materials were ready, while a printer from her church offered to print every campaign banner and flyer at no cost. Her mother collected the materials in Lagos and sent them to school. Looking back, Precious believes every provision was God’s way of reminding her that His resources are never limited.

Campaigning officially began on 4 June, and every day became another lesson in trusting God. There were disappointments, moments of uncertainty and doors that appeared firmly shut, yet God continued to create opportunities where none existed. Through an unexpected adjustment in the lecture timetable, she was given the opportunity to address the 100-level students during their laboratory practical sessions. She poured out her vision with passion, never imagining the impact it would have. Those same students soon became one of the strongest forces behind her campaign, spreading her message throughout the faculty. Her coursemates, hostel mates, friends and even students she barely knew joined the movement. Although many people saw an energetic campaign, Precious saw something deeper. She knew she was never working alone. Long before she reached people, God had already gone ahead of her.

As the election drew closer, God continued preparing her for events she could not yet understand. On 7 June, after a memo announced that the manifesto would hold on 10 June and the election on 12 June, God impressed one sentence upon her heart: “I will make history.” He then directed her to study the significance of June 12 in Nigeria’s democratic history. As she read about the annulled presidential election, she wondered why God was leading her there. The answer came sooner than expected. On 9 June, the leading presidential aspirant was disqualified, throwing the faculty into confusion and uncertainty. Rumours spread rapidly, false accusations surfaced and emotions ran high, but through it all God repeatedly reminded her, “Keep going. It is not over.” On 10 June, she stood before the faculty to deliver her manifesto with unusual confidence and clarity. Many who listened were amazed by her composure, but Precious knew the confidence they admired was simply the grace of God at work.

Election Day arrived on 12 June, Nigeria’s Democracy Day, and with the public holiday making the campus quieter than usual, every vote carried unusual significance. Before the results were announced, another unforgettable moment occurred. A student from another department whom she had never met pointed at her and said to his friend, “This is the President of the Nursing Faculty. Greet her and receive a presidential handshake.” She simply smiled, quietly remembering God’s promise in the chapel. When the official results were eventually declared on 13 June, Precious Asaba had secured 148 votes, defeating her opponent, who received 123 votes. Celebration erupted across the faculty, but her first response was worship. She knew that the victory had not begun at the ballot box. It had begun weeks earlier during a vigil when she chose obedience over fear and trusted the voice of God above every human opinion.

Today, Precious Asaba’s presidency stands as far more than an electoral victory. It is the testimony of a young woman who once sat quietly at the back of the classroom, struggled in her walk with God and even questioned His existence, yet was chosen by Him to lead. During those fourteen unforgettable days, she cried, lost weight, battled fear, endured discouragement and listened as people urged her to withdraw because victory seemed impossible. Yet God never abandoned her. He strengthened her through His Word, surrounded her with family, friends, coursemates, her roommate, church members, supporters and even strangers who believed in the vision He had given her. Looking back, she knows she did not become President because of strategy, popularity or personal strength. She became President because God called her, equipped her, provided for her and fulfilled every promise He made. Her story is living proof that God still speaks, still calls ordinary people, still keeps His promises and still receives all the glory. It is a story of grace, obedience and unwavering faith, one that defied every logical odd and demonstrated that when God ordains a purpose, nothing is impossible.

There are moments when a single encounter with God changes the direction of an entire life.
