281 Graduates Shine as McPherson University Celebrates 8th & 9th Convocation

McPherson University reached a new milestone as it proudly sent off 281 graduates into the world during its 8th and 9th combined convocation ceremonies on February 28, 2025. The event, which also marked the Institution’s Founders’ Day, was a grand celebration of academic excellence, palpable progress, and the remarkable achievements of its students. 

In his address, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Igbasan, expressed profound gratitude to God for the journey thus far. He acknowledged the unwavering support of the Visitor to the University and General Overseer of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria (FGCN), Rev. Dr. Sam Aboyeji. He also appreciated the Board of Directors (BOD), the National Executive Committee (NEC), and the National Ministerial Council (NMC) for their steadfast commitment to the University’s progress. 

The convocation was graced by the esteemed Chancellor, Dr. Mutiu Sunmonu, CON, who arrived a day prior to personally oversee final preparations. Also present were the Chairman of the Board of Trustees (BoT), Engr. Kunle Allen, and the Chairman of the Governing Council, Rev. Dr. Babatunde Idowu, both of whom were lauded for their significant contributions to the University’s development. 

The highlight of the ceremony was the convocation lecture delivered by Professor Mobolaji Ebenezer Aluko, former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University, Otuoke, and the current Ekiti State Commissioner for Infrastructure and Public Utilities. Speaking on the topic “A Nation in Transition: Managing the Yearnings of Its Restless Youth,” Prof. Aluko provided deep insights into the evolving dynamics of youth engagement in governance, technology, and socio-economic development. 

In his speech, Professor Igbasan highlighted the University’s academic growth, noting that McPherson University had received Full Accreditation from the National Universities Commission (NUC), for 11 undergraduate programs, including Nursing Science, Cyber Security, and Medical Laboratory Science. Additionally, new programs such as Data Science, Public Health, and a Ph.D. in Accounting were introduced to further expand academic programmes. 

Prof. Igbasan also emphasized the University’s rapid increase in student enrollment. He noted that in the past three years, the number of admitted students has risen significantly, with over 930 new students matriculated for the ongoing academic session. The Institution has set an ambitious goal of enrolling 2,000 students for the 2025/2026 academic session. 

Infrastructure development was another key focus of the event. Several new projects were commissioned, including a new Student Hall of Residence, an Anatomy Laboratory Building, and the FWI Hall of Residence. Ongoing projects such as a modern university health center, an ultra-modern multipurpose hall, and the acquisition of a radio transmitter for the soon-to-be-launched McU Radio were also highlighted. 

Academic excellence was duly celebrated, with 281 students graduating across various programs. Among them, 12 Students earned First-Class Honours, with Miss Adeyemi Praise Esther (Accounting) emerging as the overall best-graduating student with a CGPA of 4.95. Miss Shobowale Adeola Elizabeth (Microbiology) also distinguished herself as the best student for the 2023/2024 academic session with a CGPA of 4.72. 

The convocation also marked a new chapter as McPherson University graduated its first-ever set of postgraduate students. A total of 21 candidates completed their postgraduate diplomas and master’s degrees, while 42 Students graduated from the Executive Diploma in Church Management program. 

In his goodwill message, the Chancellor, Dr. Mutiu Sunmonu, CON, congratulated the graduating students and encouraged them to be change-makers in their respective fields. He emphasized the importance of resilience, continuous learning, and ethical leadership in shaping Nigeria’s future. He also commended the University’s Management for their dedication to academic excellence and infrastructural development. 

The Vice-Chancellor acknowledged the dedication of the University’s faculty and Staff, noting that four academic staff members had won international research grants in the past year. He assured the audience that the Institution remained committed to advancing academic excellence and staff development. 

In his charge to the graduands, Professor Igbasan urged them to uphold integrity, diligence, and excellence in all their endeavors. “As proud alumni of McPherson University, distinguish yourselves through character and purpose. Carry the University’s reputation with pride and contribute meaningfully to society,” he advised. 

The ceremony concluded with heartfelt appreciation to parents, donors, and all stakeholders who have contributed to the growth of McPherson University. The Vice-Chancellor reaffirmed his commitment to making the Institution one of the best in Nigeria and Africa, stating that 2025 is a year of resounding victories for McPherson University.
