Shobowale Adeola Elizabeth, the overall best graduating student of McPherson University’s Class of 2023/2024, delivered an inspiring valedictory speech at the combined eighth and ninth convocation ceremonies held on February 28, 2024, at the university’s campus in Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State. Addressing fellow graduates, faculty, and distinguished guests, she reflected on the challenges and triumphs that shaped their academic journey.
In her speech, Shobowale expressed deep gratitude to Almighty God for the wisdom and knowledge bestowed upon her and her peers. She also acknowledged the unwavering support of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Shobowale, whose sacrifices paved the way for her success. “Your investment in my education has yielded fruit, and I am eternally grateful,” she said, emphasizing the crucial role of family in achieving academic excellence.
She praised the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Francis Igbasan, for his commitment to fostering an environment of academic and spiritual growth. She also extended her appreciation to the Department of Biological Sciences, where she studied, as well as the university’s lecturers and staff, whose dedication and mentorship played a significant role in shaping the graduates into well-rounded individuals.
Reflecting on her time at McPherson University, she highlighted the strong bonds of friendship formed among the graduates, recalling shared experiences of hard work, laughter, and moments of struggle. She paid a heartfelt tribute to their late friend, Elijah, who was no longer with them but whose memory, she said, would continue to inspire and remind them of the preciousness of life and friendship.
Shobowale encouraged her fellow graduates to view their degrees as more than just a certificate but as a foundation for lifelong learning, growth, and impact. She urged them to strive for excellence, innovation, and community impact, reinforcing the importance of staying committed to their values and faith. “Let us continue to seek the face of God and remain committed to excellence,” she charged.
As she addressed the future, she reminded her classmates that while they had reached a milestone, the real journey was just beginning.
