The celebration of the combined 8th and 9th convocation ceremonies of McPherson university was more than just a graduation, it was a celebration of the university’s growth, resilience, and commitment to academic and moral excellence. Delivering the welcome address, the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, Rev. Dr. Babatunde Idowu, reflected on the institution’s journey, highlighting its achievements and future aspirations.
This year’s convocation was particularly symbolic as it coincided with the 13th anniversary of McPherson University’s licensing by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in 2012. From its inception as Nigeria’s 49th private university, McPherson has steadily built a reputation for excellence. Rev. Dr. Idowu attributed the university’s progress to faith, perseverance, and the collective efforts of its leadership, faculty, and students.
The institution has grown significantly since welcoming its first set of 43 students. Today, it boasts over 2,500 students across multiple disciplines, a testament to the trust placed in its educational philosophy. Dr. Idowu acknowledged that while numbers reflect growth, the real achievement lies in the quality of graduates the university produces—men and women who are prepared to lead with integrity and purpose.
Beyond student enrollment, the university has made great strides in infrastructure and learning facilities. State-of-the-art laboratories, a modernized library, upgraded hostels, and advanced ICT centers have transformed the campus into an environment conducive to both academic and personal development. Dr. Idowu emphasized that these investments reflect McPherson University’s mission to provide holistic education that blends knowledge with strong moral values.
However, growth comes with challenges. As student enrollment continues to rise, so does the need for expanded infrastructure. Dr. Idowu called on stakeholders, investors, and development partners to support the university’s plans for additional lecture halls, college buildings, and hostels. He stressed that sustaining McPherson’s vision requires collective responsibility and long-term commitment to providing a world-class learning experience.
Addressing the graduating class, the Pro-Chancellor reminded them that their education was not just a personal achievement but a foundation for lifelong impact. He urged them to uphold the values instilled in them and to see themselves as leaders and problem-solvers in their communities. “You are not just graduates; you are ambassadors of McPherson University,” he said, encouraging them to make meaningful contributions to society.
Dr. Idowu also emphasized the importance of staying connected to their alma mater. He encouraged the graduates to give back, whether through mentorship, financial contributions, or active participation in alumni programs. Their success, he noted, would not only shape their futures but also inspire the next generation of students to strive for excellence.
In his closing remarks, he expressed gratitude to the university’s management, staff, and parents for their unwavering support in shaping the students’ journeys. He congratulated the graduates, urging them to embrace the future with confidence, resilience, and a commitment to excellence. As McPherson University continues to grow, he reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to producing graduates who will make a lasting impact in Nigeria and beyond.
