Education is not just about earning a degree but about becoming a person of value. This was the key message from Dr. Mutiu Sunmonu, CON, D.Sc., the Chancellor of McPherson University, as he addressed graduates at the institution’s 8th and 9th combined Convocation Ceremonies. The event, held on February 28, 2025, brought together dignitaries, college members, parents, and well-wishers to celebrate the achievements of the graduating students. 

In his welcome address, Dr. Sunmonu expressed gratitude to God for the progress the university has made over the years. He commended the efforts of the institution’s leadership, including the Board of Trustees, the Governing Council, and the management team, for their dedication to maintaining academic and moral excellence. He also recognized the role of the Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, emphasizing its commitment to education as a tool for societal transformation. 

Acknowledging the sacrifices made by parents and guardians, the Chancellor praised them for their unwavering support in ensuring that their children received quality education. “Your labour of love will not be in vain,” he assured them, noting that their investment in their children’s future would yield great rewards. 

Dr. Sunmonu had a direct message for the graduates, urging them to carry forward the values instilled in them during their time at McPherson University. He reminded them that success is not just measured by academic achievements but by the positive impact they make in their communities and professions. “It is about the values, skills, and perspectives you have gained. Let these guide you as you step into the next phase of your journey,” he advised. 

He encouraged them to embrace challenges with courage and determination, urging them to strive for excellence in all their endeavors. “Do not rest on your oars. Go out there and do exploits. The world is waiting for the contributions you will make,” he declared, expressing confidence in their ability to succeed. 

The convocation also provided an opportunity to appreciate the university’s benefactors and partners, whose generosity has supported the institution’s growth. Dr. Sunmonu highlighted the ongoing developments within the university and praised those who had contributed to the expansion of facilities and academic programs. He called on individuals and organizations to continue their support, stressing that investments in education have lasting benefits for society. 

Beyond celebrating the graduates, the event showed  McPherson University’s commitment to academic and moral excellence. The institution continues to position itself as a top tier leader in higher education, dedicated to producing graduates who uphold integrity, innovation, and leadership. 

As the ceremony concluded, Dr. Sunmonu welcomed all guests and wished the graduating students success in their future endeavors. “May God’s grace be upon you as you step into the world,” he said, sending them forth with a message of hope, confidence, and purpose.
