How A Prospective Student From Adamawa State Found Purpose and Growth at McPherson University

Meet Uba Vanessa Wandiyahyel, a 200-level Accounting Student in the College of Humanities, Social and Management Sciences. She hails from Adamawa State in Northern Nigeria. Vanessa made the bold decision to move down south in pursuit of a higher education at McPherson University.

Her journey to McPherson University was influenced largely by her faith and family. A devoted member of the Foursquare Gospel Church, Vanessa first heard of the University through her church network. With her parents recognizing the value and reputation of the Institution, they played a role in guiding her decision. “I just wanted to go to school,” she recalls, “but had no particular school in mind.”

Vanessa describes her arrival at McPherson as a “totally different experience,” especially given the significant cultural and linguistic shift from her home State. “At first, everybody was speaking to me in Yoruba,” she shares. “I didn’t think it would be this easy to adjust.” However, over time, she embraced the new environment, adapting quickly and finding her place in the University community.

What stands out most to Vanessa about McPherson is its commitment to academic excellence. “Failure rate is very low,” she notes proudly. “Because they take time to teach you.” This dedication to student success, combined with the nurturing atmosphere, has made her academic journey fulfilling.

Beyond the classroom, Vanessa speaks highly of the University’s holistic approach to education. “My stay in McPherson is worth it,” she says. “McPherson doesn’t only teach you educationally, but helps you build moral character and spiritual growth.” The transformation she has experienced is something she holds dear. “I can see changes in me, before coming to McPherson and now that I am here.”

Her time at the University has also expanded her vision for the future. “Before coming here, I only wanted to study Accounting,” Vanessa says. “But now I’ve been able to start learning and picturing what I’ll do after obtaining my degree.” She now dreams of giving back to the Institution that has given her so much.

One of her goals after graduation is to donate hostels for both male and female students — a gesture she hopes will ease the journey for others like her. “McPherson University is the best choice,” she confidently tells prospective students, encouraging them to embrace the opportunity.

Outside academics, Vanessa enjoys singing, eating, and sleeping, and she puts her vocal talents to good use as a proud member of the University choir. From overcoming language barriers to finding purpose, Uba Vanessa Wandiyahyel’s story is one of growth, faith, and a bright future ahead.
