McPherson University, Seriki Sotayo, Ogun State, through the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science under the College of Allied Health Sciences (COAHS), joined the global commemoration of World Antimicrobial Awareness Week with a dynamic campus-wide campaign. The event aligned with the international initiative to educate the public on the dangers of antimicrobial resistance and the importance of responsible drug use.
Students, academic staff, and non-teaching personnel of the Faculty turned out in large numbers, demonstrating the college’s collective commitment to advancing public health education within and beyond the University community.
The activities commenced with a brief sensitisation session that highlighted the significance of antimicrobial stewardship. Participants were reminded that antimicrobial resistance remains one of the world’s most pressing health concerns, demanding urgent and sustained action from all sectors.
Following the sensitisation, the Faculty embarked on a campus-wide awareness walk. Students and staff moved through strategic areas of the University, displaying placards and banners bearing key messages on preventing antimicrobial resistance. The colourful procession drew the attention of other campus members, who paused to interact with the educational materials shared.
The awareness messages echoed this year’s global theme: “Act Now, Protect Our Present & Secure Our Future.” The materials urged the University community to use antibiotics responsibly and avoid self-medication. Facilitators emphasised that drug misuse remains one of the leading drivers of antimicrobial resistance.
During the walk, members of the Faculty explained that antimicrobial resistance is fuelled by drug abuse, improper prescriptions, and the overuse of antibiotics. They stressed the importance of seeking professional medical guidance before taking any medication and outlined the long-term dangers resistant infections pose to global health systems.
The College of Allied Health Sciences reaffirmed its dedication to sustaining similar awareness efforts in the coming years. The leadership of the Faculty appreciated the support of the University Management and encouraged students to remain ambassadors of responsible drug use. The event concluded with a renewed call for collective action to address the growing challenge of antimicrobial resistance.
